Um… what just happened?

So, as you’re probably aware, I’ve been writing articles on Medium for the last five months.

And I’ve been doing pretty well, steadily growing each month. In my second month, I had an article hit over 1000 views. Not a huge amount, comparatively, and not exactly enough to make a living off, but I was thrilled. And while most of my articles were not hitting this level, I was happy that a few of them were. Enough of them got enough hits to keep me motivated.

You see, success on Medium is not immediate. It’s about building up your readership, being consistent. I make sure I always have articles going up. I gave myself a schedule.

And I’ve been steadily growing each month.

And then this happened…

Yeah, I’m not sure what to feel here.

In the course of three days, one of my articles received over 10,000 hits.

I have no idea why this article has been so wildly successful. I think the title had something to do with it, but I can’t imagine that it was enough to account for such a massive spike in reads. It could be this was a more personal story. In all honesty, I possibly just got lucky. Something happened, and I tripped the algorithm to showing me to many more people.

And it could just be this article is simply the best one I’ve written, and this reflects it.

And then, a couple of days later, I get this email.

Being a Top Writer may not mean much to people outside of Medium but to me, it's a big deal. It’s been one of my goals to get this status, and I thought it would take me a lot longer to reach.

Now I need to handle the comedown. Because I doubt I’ll have another article this successful for a while. And anything I write that “only” hits the levels of success I was having up until last week will seem poor in comparison.

But I’m not going to let that bother me.

I’m simply going to wallow in my success, keep writing, and hopefully, soon I’ll surpass even this.

In the meantime, go check it out yourselves. Give it a read, and let me know your thoughts. Any ideas why this is my most successful article ever?
